American Graffiti ~ Where were you in ’62?

Although portions of American Graffiti were produced in other Northern California locations, most of the memorable scenes in George Lucas’ timeless, coming-of-age movie were filmed right here in Petaluma in June and July, 1972.

Petaluma’s Salute to American Graffiti is an annual celebration of American Graffiti, classic American cars, cruising the “main drag”, rock ‘n roll music and the “happy days” of the ‘50s and early ‘60s. Produced by Cruisin’ The Boulevard, Inc., an all-volunteer, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit California Public Benefit Corporation, Salute proceeds benefit our own community projects; schools; and other community programs that focus on the arts, history, safety and welfare of Petaluma.

"Someone Roaming the Streets Wants Me!"

A fresh faced Richard Dryfus, uttered this epiphany, while playing the iconic character, Curt Henderson, in the movie, American Graffiti.  This classic slice of pop culture was flawlessly captured by George Lucas, in his star studded salute to muscle cars, slicked back hair and waning innocence, in 1973.  An homage to his youth, filmed, largely, in Petaluma, California, Mr. Lucas did more than his part to add to the magic of our town.  In its 9th year, Cruisin’ the Boulevard, commemorates the scenes, the sounds and most of all, the cars, of American Graffiti.  A non profit organization, Cruisin’ the Boulevard boasts an impressive staff of loving volunteers, who work tirelessly to keep the spirit of American Graffiti alive.  This year, the gleaming Thunderbird driven by Suzanne Sommers, “the most perfect, dazzling creature ever”, will be celebrated.  Do some cruisin’ of your own and mark your calendars for the celebration in May of 2014.
